WU fails to download updates

Hi,

Windows XP SP1

I have been having problems with WU since v5 was made the default version. I
finally managed to get it sort of working by deleting the files in
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download, which I now actually can see which
updates I'm missing.

The problem now is it doesn't appear to download anything. I get the
"Installing Updates" dialog saying "Preparing for download" and then nothing
happens. I left it overnight but it looked the same in the morning as well.
I'm on a corporate network and the other PCs work fine with WU. I don't have
a personal firewall to block the connection. I have up to date anti virus and
anti spyware programs and the PC appears to be clean.

If it would help, please let me know which bits of the windowsupdate.log is
interesting to see.

Any sggestions?

Ive had the same problem as the original poster.
Ive followed step 1 (closing wuauserv, and reg the dll's)
This moves me forward (it doesnt hang on preparing for
download or downloading update screens) but the updates
all now come up as fails -

checking the view update history it tells me that they
failed with error 80246005

Any ideas?
