This just started happening. Using XP home SP2.

I have read through some posts on freezing problems but mine seems to
differ. The others show freezing getting to the update page. I get to the
update page fine, checks my pc for updates fine and gives me the available
updates for my pc fine.

It's when I click install and the downloading/installing screen opens is
when all freezes up. No error message just freeze. The only way I can get
out is through end task in task manager.

While this is frozen all other programs and features on the pc operate
fine.

I do not have a anti-virus scanner or updater running during this problem
and I even shut down my firewall (ZAPro) but still freezes on the
downloading/install screen.

I copied this from the log from the first time it froze. I thought it might
help in solving the problem:

Synchronization Agent has finished detecting items.

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:

Thanks for the reply. I tried everything from every link you listed.

Checking the log wasn't much help since there was no specific error message
just "download failed".

I re-registered all dll's, removed v6, reinstalled latest WU software. Read
every entry coming to close to my problem in the knowledge base. I did it
all and still have the same problem, screen still freezes right at
downloading/installing updates.

I even checked the the .js extension in folder types making sure it had the
correct entry for opening it. I did it all.

No help.

Please include all of previous message(s) in your replies.

Try:

Download stops or freezes. The Windows Update - Web Page Dialog window
appears but download never starts

I don't know if this was the hard way or the easy one but I uninstalled
SP2, downloaded the IT version, installed the over 250 MB's and now WU
works.

More than one way to skin a cat. (You basically reinstalled IE with default
settings.)
