WU hangs and does nothing from my browser

When I select WU from browser (or from start menu), I get the two options for
updates : Express or Custom. Selecting either will start "checking for the
latest updates for your computer", then does absolutely nothing, although I
am able to close the browser normally.

I have turned off (temporarily) Zonelab firewalls, MS spyware, Mcafee virus,
IE pop-upblockers. I see nothing unusual in my IE6 config (e.g. activex java
etc.). There is nothing written to windowsupdate.log.

I am using XP home 5.1.2600, IE 6.0.2900, and a very standard Dell PC
config. Thanks for any advice - Stuart.

Any ideas on either the problem or a workaround.

Thanks José - I'm afraid it makes no difference though. The problem still
exists.

Try this: Start > Run and type in without the quotes:
"%windir%\softwaredistribution\download" and delete its content.
Go then to Windows Update again.
