WU hangs

Windows Update keeps hanging.

Yesterday, I was getting error code 80072EFD. So, I found that in the
troubleshooter and performed the resolutions with no joy.

For what it's worth, I am also having IE problems such as:
In the Microsoft Discussion Groups, the reading pane is blank, but if I
double-click the thread it pops up in a new window just fine.

I followed the instructions at the link you sent and I also did the following:

1. Installed the latest scripting engine 5.6 from:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ist/webdev.asp
2. Installed the latest version of Windows Update Software from
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...code/iuctl.cab (this is
actually the v4 version, but then when I connected to WU, it updated to v5,
which might have fixed something?!?!?
3. Disabled "Automatically detect settings" in IE "LAN settings".
4. Checked the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" box in IE options

I'm not sure exactly what worked, but something did, and now I'm updated.
