What are the requirements when downloading and installing from windows
update? Should anti-virus,spybot,zonealarm etc. be shut down during the
process? Thanks.

Unless certain updates require you to shutdown those programs...and it would
say in the 'read more' part of the update, then you don't have to shut those
things down.

You don't get the opportunity to read the read me at the WU download and
install site. Thanks for the response anyway.

Well, everything I have ever downloaded from the Windows Update Site(WU) I
have been able select which downloads I want to download, and in each box
that defines the available download, there will be the basic information,
then a ...Details... link, (it might say 'Read More') some say you may have
to restart your computer for the update to take effect, etc. Within the WU
site, whatever you choose will be installed, however, if you use the Windows
Update Catalog, you can download the updates to a folder of your choice and
install them at a later time, if you wish. To reach the Windows Update
Catalog, go to the Windows Update site, then, in the pane on the left you
will see administrator options. Click on that and then look for the blue
link that says Windows Update Catalog.
There you will see 2 choices, one for Windows OS updates, the other for
driver and hardware..make your choice.
Then, from the dropdown list, choose your os version, and language, then
click search.

You should see that each available update is encased in its own box, with
limited info and a either 'read more', or 'details' link.
