WU stuffed after repeat Defender update

Uninstalled/reinstalled defender, followed advice in other threads - result,
Update site just sits there "Checking ifyour computer has ..." and that's it.

How do I sort this out?

Unless you're a BETA tester, remove the BETA Defender product from your
machine.

I've got rid of Defender, but WU still sits there checking if the current WU
software is up to date
