Is WU supposed to be working for Win98 now?

Pre-support cutoff date updates only, of course.

Or is WU just not accessible at all?

With the 0x8ddd0004 error I'm seeing in WU -- for which I've tried every
single thing ever published online to solve -- it's hard to tell, as today
is the first time I've tried it in the last couple months.

Oh, and is "Microsoft Update" supposed to be usable on Win98? That I've
never tried before today, so again, it's hard to tell. The furthest I get
with it is the message about installing the ActiveX control -- by clicking
on IE SP2's Information Bar, which, of course, doesn't exist in Win98's IE
SP1.

Yes, I realize that (and alluded to it), but was speaking only of pre-cutoff
date updates.

Nope, it should still work.

http://www.mshelper.de/downloads/regs/WinUpdRestore.exe
was among those "things" you've tried so far?

Nope, Microsoft Update is V6, Windows Update for Windows 98 stucks on
V4 IIRC.

Bye,

Yes, I learned that when installing from scratch early in the year. Once
that was installed, WU worked fine for everything up through the last time I
tried it a couple months ago. It was up-to-date as of then.

Of the three things in there, the first two I'd done before, but not the
third (deleting the two DLLs), so I tried all three and rebooted for good
measure, but still no luck. I don't think I've ever seen a WU error this
stubborn before, it's amazing. Thanks.

Admitting defeat, I went back to an image from June, when I could get into
WU fine. It's a totally clean, updated installation (as of that time) with
nothing else installed.

Here's what I'm presented with when I run WU from that:
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/8990/wuxx2.jpg

And if I say "Yes" to that, about a minute later I'm dumped to the
0x8ddd0004 screen like before.

What's interesting about MS offering that control is the date: May 2005. I
should have already had that from all the updates I did earlier this year--I
always say Yes to those prompts, and if you say No, it doesn't even let you
in.

So why would it be asking again? If people weren't telling me WU is still
turned on for Win98 users, I'd sure think it wasn't. This very much seems
like a change made on their end, not mine.

I've only been try WU, not expecting MU to really work.

However, note the screen shot in my previous message: Win98's WU is routing
me to *v6*, not v4. Why it's doing that I don't know. Is there a way to
force going to v4? Perhaps the reason the control I'm being offered with WU
v6 doesn't work is that it's not for W98. Has MS crossed something up with
their servers?

It's a different machine altogether. v4 redirects to v6 for me. Does anyone
on W98 actually stay on v4 anymore?
