WU/System Restore/IE hang

I have a suped up Gateway 500C desktop that I purchased with XP home with a
hardware (router) firewall. It now has sp2 and has been updated regularly for
the past 5 years. A week ago I began having problems shutting down. I went
to WU and IE6 hangs before accessing site. My update drivers hang in device
manager. System Restore will not work (because WU hangs?). I have been
troubleshooting my butt off. The WU tab in system properties hangs. The WU
in control panel hangs. Security Center opens but hangs when I try to
initialize AU. I have reset IE and was able to access WU, but I was not
registered (sans Error number: 0x80240036 or 0x80070420)? None of these
codes are in the WU Troubleshooter. This "worked" for a while, solving
problems with shutdown and hanging, but it returns after a few reboots. I
have tried re-registering AU files, but only after the original hanging
occurred. Now I am going to try to reset IE again and run through
re-registering files. Please let me know if anyone has any other ideas and I
will repost with results. Thanks in advance!

Tried it and it did not work. I get the same error messages and when I check
services it shows AU as "stopping...". Of course, this hangs too! I hope
that someone can and will help.
