WU v5, Can't download updates

I have recently installed XP SP2 on a number of computers. On Dells, it
works. On my IBM machines though, WindowsUpdate no longer functions properly
after the SP update. Here is a summary of what I've done with these machines
to troubleshoot them:

At first, I couldn't get past the screen where I chose Express or Custom
installation. I was getting the error code 0x800A0046. So, I did the
following:

1. Ensured that I was using an Administrative account.

2. Ensured that the security descriptor allowed interactive users to run
windows update (ala this post:
http://communities2.microsoft.com/co...0b2&sloc=en-us)

That fixed the first problem. Now, when I select any patch for downloading,
I get error messages indicating that the download failed. In the installation
history, I get an error code of 80246008, regardless of which patch I have
tried to install. So, I proceeded to do this:

1. Checked to make sure BITS was running. It is not. When I tried to start
it, the service fails to start, and I get the error code 2147467243. I have
tried to find information online about this error code, with no luck. I have
pasted my the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log file at the end of this message.

2. I have also checked that qmgr.dll and qmgrprxy.dll are registered. They
are.

Any suggestions?

Could you please try and install the bits update again from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If this does not resolve the issue then try the following:

1. Register qmgr.dll
A. Click Start.
B. Choose Run.
C. In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgr.dll.
D. Click OK.
2. Register qmgrprxy.dll
A. Click Start.
B. Choose Run.
C. In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll.
D. Click OK.

Hi ,

It maybe possible the BITS security descriptor has changed too try and
verify the security descriptor for the BITS service.


Run the folling command. sc sdshow BITS and the output should be the
following:
DA;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLO CRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSW
LOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

Also check the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost and double click the netsvcs value name -- is the
WUAUSERV and BITS listed under value data? If no, then you found a problem.

Verify the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv

To resolve the issue, find a good computer and export this key. Then import
the key
to the problematic computer.
NOTE: Under the

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\wuauserv\Parameters"
key,

there is a value:

Value Name: Service Dll

Value Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ

Value Data: C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauserv.dll

Please make sure that the path to the wuauserv.dll file is correct.

Symptom: When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site,
you see the 0x800A0046 error.
Cause: This error can occur if the security descriptor does not allow have
the Authenticated Users to run Windows Update.
Resolution: Set the Security Descriptor for the BITS service.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type cmd.
4. Click OK.
5. At the command prompt type sc sdset bits

Oh, my God. I have exactly the same problem as yours.

My computer is a Dell desktop. So I don't think it's because of the
third-party software by either Dell or IBM.

You sure this is a problem? The problematic machine doesn't have those
two value data. HOWEVER, my other two machines working very well don't

Ok see here is what I did to fix this problem on my machine. I hope everyone
has the same success.

1. Goto HK_C_U\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\W indows Update and
deleted the key
2. Goto HK_L_M\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\W indows Update and
deleted the key
3. Open HIJACKTHIS and deleted this: DPF:
{6414512B-B978-451D-A0D8-FCFDF33E833C} (WUWebControl Class) -
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...?1093475842247

4. Log off system and goto Windows Update... allow the active x control to
install and then run windows setup install file when prompted.

I have been experiencing similiar problems since I installed SP2.

Automatic Updates worked well poreviously and then started to fail after SP@
install. Every attempt at automatic updates would fail, but maula updates
worked.

BITS (Background Intellegent Transfer Service) was the key to my solution.
Based on these posts, I determined that my BITS service was set to "Manual".
Once I set it to Automatic and staarted the service..... updates functioned
fine.

Hello Allen,
I had this problem where the BITS service wouldn't start, I ran your
command, it was successful and now BITS does start.
My question is how do I make this permanent?
This is like the 2nd time or so this has happened.
