Hello,

We are having a problem with a Windows 2008 server talking to our WSUS 3.0
SP1 server. It suggests the problem is with the WUA, and certainly have
experienced similar problems with other machines,

When trying to install WUA, with or without the wuforce switch, the system
fails to install with the message:

"Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is already installed."

I have even tried the /uninstall switch which also fails.
I have also tried the trick to register the usual dll files

Does anyone know how I maybe able to resolve this?

In which folder exactly is the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe residing?
Try the following, *including* the quotes and the blanks:
"[drive]:[path]\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

Replace [drive] with the drive letter or server name and [path] with
the *complete* path to the folder in which WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
is placed into.

In case it's the 64bit version of WUA, replace the EXE name with the
right one.

Bye,
Freudi

First, there is no requirement to install the WUA on a Windows Server 2008
system, as the WUA installed on Win2008 is already perfectly capable of
communicating with a WSUS server, and *selfupdating* (if required).

A point to be taken at face value.

Perhaps you could explain WHY you feel these steps are necessary?

Note: You'd likely do better by:
[1] Running the Client Diagnostic Tool on the Win2008 system and posting the
results for analysis,
or
[2] Reviewing the WindowsUpdate.log on the Win2008 system and posting the
results (specifically, the entries introducing error codes).

*Rarely* is such a condition the result of a defective WUA, and when it is,
it's almost always one of a handful of well documented, and well known,
causes.

Thanks for your help - I forgot about the Automatic updates logs...
Found an ancient GPO sending the machine to the wrong SUS machine (part of a
company merger),.... Thanks for your help = Closing ticket
