every time i start up my computer, or come back from being idle, this
message comes up (or is up):

wuauclt.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x370013e8" referenced memory at "0x7c801d77". The
memory could not be "written".

click on OK to terminate the program

internet explorer also does not work anymore, but mozilla firefox does, and
whenever i close internet explorer, the error pops up.

i'm not sure what the source of the problem is (so i don't know which type
or supprt i need). i've run adaware and spy sweeper, and my anti-virus check
(mcafee), and they detect no problems. this is a new computer, and i've been
downloading and installing a lot of things, i think that's the source of the
error, i just don't know how to fix it.

The error message plus the fact that IE does not function *may* indicate
that the system is infected. To rule malware out and to have the system
scanned via Firefox, Sun java must be installed.
If it is, then go here :
http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp
Click the Scan Now link.
Suggest you temporarily disable McAfee from monitoring the system while
it's been scanned by TrendMicro's Housecall.

Also, you can download and install a-squared-FREE to detect if there are
any trojans, ad|spyware, worms, diallers, etc, present :
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
The download link is at the bottom of the page.

You really need to ascertain that the system is malware free as the
first step.

That's AutoUpdate trying to check for new updates but fails.

Which Windows version are you using?

Since when (which action like installing, uninstalling, updateing or
reconfigureing which application) does this happen?

What's the error message you're receiving?
Which AddOns /extensions for IE do you have installed?

Bye,
Freudi

Which problems exactly? The OP's ones doesn't seem to be related
in any kind to KB918899.

This one is irelevant if you're on Windows XP SP2.

Bye,
Freudi
