Hi,

Please can someone help to resolve the problem I have with Windows Updates.
The following message appears when trying to update (both Express & Custom):

"wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
the inconvenience"

I have tried the following (after searching google for a fix):
- Turned off disabled error reporting
- Turned off Automatic Update service
- Run the following command:
"C:\Downloads\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

I am using Windows XP Home and SP 2 Build 2600. I am on a small network
with access to the internet via a Netgear hub.

Many thanks.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Try this ... with the Automatic Updates service set to Automatic and the
Background Intelligent File Transfer service set to Manual...
go to Start > Run > type in or copy&paste the below into the Open: line
and then click OK or press Enter

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Revisit Windows Update and see if the error occurs.

I have just come back from a PC doing just this problem and i shutdown the
automatics update service and background inteligence transfer service. I
rebooted the pc and the error never came back. It works for my company
because i use an update utility called PatchIT that patches our clients from
the DC.

hope that helps
