WUAUCLT.EXE Errors

Beginning yesterday evening, I started getting wuauclt.exe errors. HUNDREDS
of them. This is on XP-SP3. This is a brand new issue. When I tried to go
to get email support, I got a message that the web page was closed down to
protect the computer because something malicious was running. I ran Norton
AV with brand new defs, and it found nothing.

The machine would NOT let me go back to older restoral points... failed on
any I tried. I see that last Wednesday the 3.0 services were installed. I
tried to go back before that but the system won't do it.

Can someone tell me what the SIZE of wuauclt.exe should be in bytes, and if
anyone else is experiencing this error. It's not only annoying but also
disabling.

In addition, I was NOT able to go to a Windows update page nor a Microsoft
update page.

Help!!!

Chances are that you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks PA... No, that wasn't it, but I did use the guys at pcsafety. No
hijacking. My wuauclt.exe was fine. It was 2 other files, esend.dll and
wuweb.dll that were "mysteriously" corrupted. They renamed those two files,
brought them back from the servicepacks folder, and it corrected it. Took
them 2 hours to figure it out though.

Thank you VERY much for the replay.

YW & thanks for your feedback.

QED: How did those 2 files get corrupted?? Is your Norton application the
equivalent of a hijackware infection?

I have no idea how those two got corrupted. NAV has always been very solid
for me. Again, this is XP-SP3, not Vista...

BTW, not sure if both were corrupted. He replaced esend.dll because it was
second in line to the error itself. We didn't try it without replacing the
wuweb.dll so I'm not sure if it was corupted. I think esend.dll was
definitely the main problem though.

Sorry. The full title of KB822158 is "Virus scanning recommendations for
computers that are running Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, *Windows XP*,
or Windows Vista."
