wuauclt.exe has a mind of its own

Since a recent BITS update from the v5 site, my windows
update icon in the task bar keeps popping up and will not
go away no matter how many times I use the task manager
to shut it off! It's really irritating. At one point I
had two icons running simultaneously. I don't know why.
Why is wuauclt.exe running anyway? When I touch the
cursor to it, it reads: downloading updates: 0%. Is this
just permantly linked to the windows site? Is it now a
kind of spyware? I've also discovered problems trying to
play previously stored media (videos) with QuickTime
since this began.

Can someone tell me what to do?

Help!!!
