wuauclt.exe runs when automatic updates disabled

I have disabled Automatic Updates in Windows XP SP2 and yet wuauclt.exe will
run after a restart. It will end after a few minutes, however. It will also
run after 24 hours, and then end after a few minutes.

I hope Microsoft has a patch for this.

That's normal. I suspect you mean you have used the
Turn off Automatic Updates radio button here:
control wuaucpl.cpl
but have left the Automatic Updates service still running.

You need to have the service running if you want to visit
the Windows Update site and use it. To see this,
in a command window enter:
sc qdescription wuauserv
