Hi there,

Windows XP and the "wuauclt.exe" is stuck on in the task manager after boot
up. It makes the processor run at 100%. I can end the process manually and
that takes care of it for a while, then it comes back on again.

How do I get rid of it so I can make the computer run normally again?

Thanks,

Gordon

Gordon,

Are you 100% certain that the system is malware free ? Suggest you read
this tutorial : Tutorial for Kapersky On-line Virus Scanner
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php...ab62c32c4b704f
And then have the entire system scanned at Kaspersky's Online Virus
Scanner : http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

IF you have already ascertained that the system is malware free, suggest
you open the Services console and ensure that Automatic Updates is set
to Automatic and that the BITS service is set to Manual. Then attempt to
access the Windows Update site.
If you can not access WU, check to see if BITS has entered the Started
state. If it has not, suggest you follow the steps laid out here for
reinstalling it :

Hi Mow Green,

I did the Kapersky check, the MS Live Safety Site check, SpyBot, Pest
Patrol, and Ad Aware and nothing came up in the way of malware.

The BITS and AutoUpdate services I turned on and started.

But it still hangs when going to Windows update... "wuauclt.exe" grabs the
processor at 99% and just slows the machine to a crawl... otherwise if I
disable the Automatic Update services the machines runs just great.... it's
just that one thing, hanging at the update as if it's looking for something
it can't find....

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Gordon

Gordon,

Which antivirus program is installed ? The issue *may* be caused by
software blocking either scripting, popups, cookies, etc.
Suggest you try booting the system to Safe Mode with Networking and see
if the issue occurs from within there.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d..._failsafe.mspx
Also, open the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory with
Notepad. Scroll down towards the bottom for the most recent entries and
see if you can locate any error codes associated with the failed
attempts to access WU.

Hi MowGreen....

Okay, in Safe Mode it works....

Norton Internet Security 2005 installed in there.

I tried to uninstall it, but it just goes dead after trying to remove it at
the Add/Remove in Control Panel. The Programs Norton stuff is gone....

Here is the log from before going into Safe Mode:

So, it must be, as you say NIS and/or its scripting - cookie blocking,
etc....

If I can just get the NIS2005 off the machine, I'll know better....

Thanks,

Gordon

Howdy Gordon,

Unfortunately it's not that easy to remove NIS 2005 and repair the
damage that it does. But, there is a way
http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm

Once you get NIS totally removed, scripting to function, BITS
restored/reinstalled, if SP2 is installed, suggest running this from a
Command Prompt to repair any damage to the Winsock.
To get to a Command Prompt, go to Start, Run, type in

cmd

Click OK.
At the Command Prompt type in

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter. Now type in

exit

Press Enter and then restart the system to complete the repair.
The system should now be able to successfully access Windows Update.
