wuauclt.ext service keeps crashing!!!

Just recently my laptop with XP Pro has been having problem with the windows
update service crashing. As soon as the service is started, it immediately
crashes with an error stating "Automatic Updates has encountered an error..."
The error log reports:

"Faulting application wuauclt.exe, version 5.8.0.2469, faulting module
wuauclt.exe, version 5.8.0.2469, fault address 0x000070f7."

When trying to debug further using the provided information links, I find
the following:

"Exception Information
Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000 Address: 0x000000000000004070f7"

I've googled and searched all over and haven't been able to find any clues
as to why this is happening. Can anyone shed some light as to what's
happening and how can I fix it?

P.S. The only thing I can think of is that this started after I upgraded my
hard drive using Acronis True Image

Do you have a corresponding entry in drwtsn32.log for this?
(e.g. look for a line with that address labeled FAULT -> )
Extract the Stack Back Trace which follows it for more clues.

Alternatively try reinstalling the agent software:
