1. Did you have occasion to reinstall WinXP and then install SP3 manually on
or shortly before 15 Nov-2008? 2. Start | Run | (type) winver | [OK] Post the entire second line of text displayed after running the above command. 3. Is Automatic Updates enabled? If it is, what does WindowsUpdate.log have to say about all this? 4a. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed SP3? 4b. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)? 5. Are you sure that's the correct error number? 0xFFFFFBD3 errors are almost always associated with MS Exchange (JET_errVersionStoreOutOfMemory) and Exchange has nothing whatsoever to do with WU/MU/AU. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Bitmap wrote: > Microsoft Update tried to install Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.788 every > day between 15Nov and 26 Dec 2008 but in each case the installation failed > with error code 0xFFFFFBD3. Thank you Bear. The answers to your questions:
1. I did install SP3 probably around that time but over my original copy of WinXP. I have a feeling that I did that manually. 2. Version 5.1 (Build 2600 xpsp_sp2_qfe.070227-2300:Service Pack 3) 3. Auto Update is enabled and the final line of the log says "Windows Update Client successfully detected 0 updates". The there is a great deal in the log but unfortunately it does not go back as far as the failed updater installation. How can I get the log to you if that would be useful please? I did run the auto data collection tool that MS recommends and sent the information to MS. They suggested scouring the Knowledge Base (did that for 2 hours) or to post a request for help here. 4a Authentium AV and Zone Alarm Pro Firewall were installed at the time SP3 was installed. I just can't remember if they were switched off while that happened. 4b. Norton or McAfee have never been installed on this PC. WU has always functioned well with Authentium/Zone Alarm Pro prior to this failure. I did change to Kasperski a week ago but the problem persists. 5. Yes absolutely sure of the error code. Here's a copy and paste from the update history: Error Code: 0xFFFFFBD3. From what I have read elewhere, the code I think tends to relate to a failure to clean up temporary files. That might be why the updater appears to pass the validity check before searching for updates? Is it coincidental that SP3 was installed shortly before the updater update failed or would there be merit in uninstalling SP3 and seeing if WU will spot that it's missing and put it again? If it doesn't spot it, I can still install it manually. Really grateful for your help "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > 1. You have a WinXP SP3 beta build installed, not the final release, and that's
what's causing the behavior. 1a. Read & heed the following when uninstalling SP3 beta and when installing SP3 final: http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx 1b. If you're running ZA Free, I would *strongly* recommend that you uninstall it and enable the Windows Firewall at this point! If it's ZA Pro and you'd prefer not to uninstall it, at least disable it and then enable the Windows Firewall at this point! 2. Uninstall WinXP SP3 beta via Add/Remove Programs and reboot twice. How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249 3. With your AV app still disabled and with Windows Firewall (only) running in the background, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Install any required software then click on CONTINUE select CUSTOM and scan | select WinXP SP3 and proceed to install it. Follow all prompts. (NB: It may take 1-2 hours for the installation to complete so be very, very patient and resist the temptation to Cancel!) 4. After rebooting twice, return to Windows Update | select CUSTOM and scan, then Accept the install of all critical security updates (only) offered; follow all prompts. [If it's not already installed, I do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update!] 5. Now make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525 6. Reinstall ZA Free or Pro, if necessary/desired. Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3) and *only until* 14 Apr-09. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3" -- ~PA Bear Bitmap wrote: > Thank you Bear. Thanks for the additional advice but sad to report that like many other users
it would seem, I could not uninstall SP3 because the uninstaller could not find a necessary file (not told what file). I found further MS guidance on how to uninstall and of the 4 methods, the first 3 have failed. I don't want to risk option 4 which involves changes to the registry so I guess I just have to put up with a bad job and not get updates any more. Is there no downloadable fix please that will take out SP3 in the event that a required file is not found? It does seem to be a common problem.
