After installing KB889293, if I try and launch Windows Update, nothing
happens. I am running W2k Server SP4. I can un install the update, and the
Windows Update works again. I tried launching wupdmgr.exe from the
c:\Winnt\System\ folder and get the same results.

Hi

If you manually download and install 889669, does it start to
work better then?

An update rollup is available for Internet Explorer 6 SP1
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=889669

(889669 includes MS04-040 + some additional non-security
related updates)

Note:
If 889669 fixes the problem, next time Microsoft releases a cumulative
update for Internet Explorer, you may experience the problem again.

Then you will need to download a newer version of the IE update rollup
(that includes the new cumulative update + some additional
non-security related updates). Note that the IE update rollups are
not delivered through Windows Update.

Still has the same problem. KB889293 has a newer version (based on file
date) of wupdmgr.exe that appears to be the problem.

Hi

Strange, because neither KB889293 or KB889669 contains the file
wupdmgr.exe...

Sorry, I may have been a bit confused. I've been playing with it a little
more trying to find the cause, and found that wupdmgr.exe itself is static,
but when KB889293 is installed it doesn't work, and when KB889293 is
uninstalled it does work. Is there a registry entry or dll that my be the
culpret?

Hi

Maybe, but I'm not sure how to tackle this one...
