WUS and SMS 2003

Please direct me to the correct newsgroup if this one is not the one.

We have SMS 2003 that is used to update our Windows XP clients only.
But I would like to try this Windows Update Services (WUS) for our server.

Does anyone know if there is an issue running SMS and WUS at the same time?
I ask because the guide for WUS sort of hints that the Automatic Updates
service on clients will be automatically updated and point to the WUS server
it finds. I cannot have that. Our XP clients still need to get updates
from SMS. I only want to update our servers with WUS.
