x64 Print Server - Can't Install x86 Driver

Hi -

I have a Windows 2003 R2 64 bit, SP2 server. I have installed 2 shared
printers, one is a Xerox Color printer for which I had no trouble installing
the x86 driver. The other is a Dell Laser 5210n (postscript driver), but I
can't get the x86 PS driver to install for that one.......

From the 2003 server, I point go to the Sharing tab, Additional Drivers and
navigate to the inf for the x86 driver. When I click the OK button, I get
the message "The specified location does not contain the driver Dell Laser
Printer 5210n PS for the requested processor architecture." If I go to the
Print Server Properties and add the driver to the driver store I am
successful, but I still can't get it to install for the print queue (I am
still prompted for a location of the driver).

If I connect to the print queue on the server from Windows XP and try to
install the x86 driver I get the message "Windows cannot locate a suitable
print driver."

This reminds me of similar problems I had seen a few years ago when trying
to set up XP clients to print to an NT 4 print server. If I remember
correctly it may have been that I needed to copy the inf file to the
Windows\Inf folder on the XP client. I tried that for this problem but it
did no good.

I have searched on the Dell and MS sites but can't find the solution there.

Thanks for any help on this.

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, the issues may occur if the printer driver is not
compatible with your computer that is running a 64-bit version of Microsoft
Windows. You cannot use a 32-bit printer driver on a computer that is
running a 64-bit version of Windows.

I still suggest you first contact the manufacturer of printer to see if
there is any more information about the 64-bit compatible driver. Please
feel free to involve me in the discussion pool. I would be glad to provide
any information necessary. Also you may refer to the following article to
see if it can help:

895612: How to find a compatible printer driver for a computer that is
running a 64-bit version of Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895612

I hope the information helps.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

Thanks for the reply.

You may have misunderstood my question:

I am not trying to use a 32 bit driver for my 64 bit OS. I have the printer
working just fine on the 64 bit OS (which is the OS of the print server).
The problem is that I couldn't get the 32 bit driver installed for the
clients that need it.

HOWEVER, you actually solved my problem by suggesting that I visit the
vendor's site for the newest driver. This is a brand new printer, so I
thought the x86 driver on the CD that came with it would be up to date.
Apparently that wasn't the case; I went to the Dell site and got the x86
driver from there and it worked immediately.

Thanks!
