Hi.
Was installing windows updates on 18 aug 2007.
OS is Windows XP SP2 Home.
List of three items to be updated.
One was security for outlook express, successful.
Two was security for XMl, failed.

Rebooted and try again. Failed to install again.
Running another firewall, windows firewall off.
Following are the services failed to install:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 6.0 and Microsoft XML Core
Services 6.0 Service Pack 1 (KB933579)

What's wrong?
How do i go about diagnosing the problem and fixing it?
Many Thanks.

Regards.

Two installation log files for both updates were created in the WINDOWS
directory [folder]
For KB936181, the log is named
msxml4-KB936181-enu.LOG
For KB933579, the log is named
msxml-KB933579-enu-x86.log

[NOTE: enu is for English. If your version of XP is a different
language, that will be the only thing different.
Same for x86 shown for KB933579. It will show as x64 for 64 bit versions
of XP]

Please post both logs, Jeremy. Perhaps we can figure out why the updates
failed to install.

Every system I've installed the XML updates to had those logs created,
Jeremy. I notified MS about the incorrect info on the Security Bulletin
page stating that no logs were applicable but have not heard anything
back as of yet.
Error code 0x80070422 indicates that the BITS service is Stopped or has
been Disabled. Please open the Services console and check to see if BITS
is at least set to Manual. Automatic Updates will install with BITS set
to Manual.
Start > Run > type in

services.msc
Click OK or press Enter

Locate the Background Intelligent Transfer Service [BITS]in the right frame.
Double click it and check the Startup type.

You could also attempt to manually download and SAVE both of the updates:

Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0
(KB936181)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-185639BA2807

Microsoft XML Core Services 6.0
(KB933579)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-64443913C976

After the download completes close the browser and any other open programs.
Install KB936181 first, reboot if requested to
Then install KB933579, reboot if requested to

That will eliminate BITS from the update process as opposed to using
Automatic Updates to install them.

Dear MowGreen [MVP],

Sorry for the late reply. I must have failed to activate the notification
service and I did not check for your reply until today.

First, thank you, I believe the two XML updates has been resolved, though I
don't understand what was wrong in the first place.

I went to take a look at BITS and found it to be in manual mode.

So i decided to downloaded the two packages from the website as you
recommended and tried to install them. An error appeared in regard to the
Windows Installer (Did not take the exact error message from the prompt).

So i went to services.msc and found the Windows Installer to be disabled, i
switched it to manual and installed manually the packages successfully.

I think this is where the error occured. But why would that be the case? Why
make these two packages go through Windows Installer service and not the
other updates?

Is BITS only a service running for windows updates? Or is it used by other
applications as well for their own updates.

In regard to the .LOG files, I was trying to ask if there was like an index
file, i.e., another log file that has a list of the updates that have been
installed.

"..incorrect info on the Security Bulletin page stating that no logs were
applicable..." What does this mean? How do you read the .LOG files?

Thank you for your patience. Just trying to learn more. :-)

Thanks.
Regards

I found the WindowsUpdate.log but have little idea in understanding the
entries. Could you (if you don't mind) explain them to me. Please do not feel
the need to response or rush if you do not want to.

This explains what's going on in the log, Jeremy -

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

As to your previous post's questions:
> So i went to services.msc and found the Windows Installer to be disabled, i
> switched it to manual and installed manually the packages successfully.
> I think this is where the error occured. But why would that be the case? Why

NO updates will install with the Windows Installer Disabled. It can be
set to Manual.

> Is BITS only a service running for windows updates? Or is it used by other
> applications as well for their own updates.

AFAIK, there's nothing else that uses BITS ... yet:

Write Auto-Updating Apps with .NET and the Background Intelligent
Transfer Service API

The ReportingEvents.log located in SoftwareDistribution shows all
successful updates.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS07-042.mspx

That's wrong, as I've stated previously but gave no reference to <w>
The installation logs are helpful in troubleshooting specifically where
the update is failing to install.
Too bad Vista doesn't have them ...

I've a problem with windows updates too..

Here is how I got my problem:
1) System boot up too slow .. It took like 10-12 mins to logon page.
2) My system is with SP3 but I only have WinXP with SP2. Therefore, I
decided to uninstall SP3 and then run a fix with SP2. It works well with my

But not with one described in this very thread. So it would have been
a good idea to start your own thread on the issue you ran into - in
case the search function wouldn't have helped.

You may want to type "regsvr32 wups2.dll" into "Run" in the Start
menu and hit the [Enter] key or klick on OK. Afterwards restart
the Automatic Updates *services* (Start -> Run -> services.msc [Enter])
or restart Windows as a whole and see, if the issue is still present.

Bye,
Freudi
