Thank you very much PA Bear!
I ran those reg query commands from http://www.fiddlertool.com/ua.aspx and it reported this conspicuous registry entry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) REG_SZ After deleting the registry value windows update works again! Yay! YW & thanks for your feedback. (I suspect you may have failed to disable
all real-time system protections prior to installing IE7 and/or SP2...and/or prior to uninstalling IE8.)
