XP & Office updates fail to install

I have HP/Compaq NC6220 laptop, XP Pro SP 2, & Office 2003.
The latest MS XP & Office updates fail to install. In addition, Repair
Office under Add/Remove Programs terminates "prematurely with unexpected
error". Manually downloaded Office updates, but have same failure. Attempt to
install MS Desktop Search does not show any errors, but it does not show up
under programs. Downloaded & attempted to run LISTOOL per MS directions, but
fails to run.

It appears I have a bigger issue, either with the MS install utility, or
perhaps with the registry??
