Well, thanks for the flood of apathy. After spending all day (on a Mac which
seems to be working fine) looking for solutions, one of the knowledge base
items seems to suggest that the regitry is corrupt. There is a fix (not of
course, guaranteed to work) which involves copying and deleting lots of
files. Only thing is, 'WARNING: This is not to be used where OEM Windows has
been used' This apparently adds layers of inaccessible passwords - thanks a
bunch!
Of course, I have a PC with XP suppled as OEM. The Contact Microsoft on-line
support page comes into it's own here as it asks for the serial numbe of XP.
I don't have one of course, as it's OEM. Microsoft is really helpful here and
says 'Contact your manufacturer'. Like Advent are reall interested in IE7
buggering up my registry!
I've used genuine Microsoft softyware, used Microsoft Updates, and another
Microsoft product has screwed my computer! Where's the support when you need
it? There is a UK help line number but it's ony available during weekday
working hours. Guess what - I'm at work those hours too!
To recap. Through no fault of my own, my computer is not working at all.
Support is limited to picking through articles with similar symptoms, with no
guarantee that it will fix it. Telephone help isn't available at the
weekends. Oh, and there may be no fix anyway because I've commited the sin of
buying a PC with XP as OEM. I spent ALL DAY yesterday trying - without any
success - to sort it out.
Well, needless to say, it's not going to happen again. If I've to rebuild my
PC, which is something I REALLY DON'T HAVE THE TIME FOR, it won't be with
Microsoft products. If there's anyone out there in Microsoft land who
actually cares that a customer is SO ****ed off at their product and want's
to change my rapidly deteriorating opinion of their products, now's the time
to step in. You'll have to reply via these pages as my e-mail doesn't
work.....
