I believe that XP can read Vista's NTFS (someone out there correct me if
not).
So here's my idea: your friend wants to get stuff off the drive because the
drive is bad, but you can't read the drive because it's bad...
Try downloading a trial version of drive restoration software. The trial
version won't let you save the data, but it will let you see what it can
find.
I have used the software from
http://www.runtime.org/ successfully, but
there are others.
Note that they sell two versions (or used to), one for FAT32 and one for
NTFS.
Meanwhile don't do anything that writes to the drive (but you knew that).
