XP cant access Vista laptop hard drive ?

I am trying to save some data from a friends laptop hard drive, i have
plugged it in my usb device.
It shows in xp's computer management as 'disk 1', but i cant see it in
explorer.
All context menu options are greyed out except 'delete partition'.
It has Vista on, its not the jumper settings - whats the fix please ??

I believe that XP can read Vista's NTFS (someone out there correct me if
not).

So here's my idea: your friend wants to get stuff off the drive because the
drive is bad, but you can't read the drive because it's bad...

Try downloading a trial version of drive restoration software. The trial
version won't let you save the data, but it will let you see what it can
find.

I have used the software from http://www.runtime.org/ successfully, but
there are others.

Note that they sell two versions (or used to), one for FAT32 and one for
NTFS.

Meanwhile don't do anything that writes to the drive (but you knew that).

Gene, the owner assures me the drive is not faulty - the laptop died and was
replaced foc under warranty. The old drive with his data on has been
returned.
I have tried it on his new Vista laptop, and my XP Pro, same result. I
cannot assign a drive letter to it. Wondering if there is a boot disc like
Hirens or similar that will let me access it ?

But I have a new thought. First time this week :-)

Maybe your USB -> SATA (or whatever) adapter is flawed...

Have you tried more than one interface to the drive?

Also: if it's an IDE (PATA) drive: have you tried the other jumper setting?
Some adapters like "Master" and others seem to like "Cable Select". Some
don't care...

and older partitioning SW or OS are adviced
keep their hands away from vista partitions.

I would advice to try read a disk - at least as test
- on other Vista machine.

ok, i will persevere. Next week when back at work, got a few more 'tools'
there.
