OK I had all kinds of problems with my Laptop it had obtained the 2009 virus
and it had been in the shop several times for attempts to remove it. After
giving in we finally elected to blow it away and reload windows and all of
the latest XP updates.

I didn't want to do this due to using the Laptop for field service of
equipment meaning I would have to reload a multitude of different software’s,
and just didn't want to go thru the pain and agony of it all. After reloading
an updating to XP SP3 and a couple of days loading vendors sooftware, it was
working for the most part.

I went to work on some equipment that I had been working on prior to all of
this and could not connect to it via the com port as normally. After
discussion with the manufacture of the vendor’s software they advised that
SP3 was not approved for the driver and I would have to roll back to SP2. I
attempted to do this and it restored back to SP1 and I had to update to SP2
in doing this now when I go to the device manager to configure my com port
nothing appears - I mean nothing blank

Can anyone advise to what will correct this I really don't want to go thru
the whole process of reload windows from scratch?

Any help greatly appreciated

Device Manager and Network Connections may be blank after you install
Windows XP Service Pack 3 [or SP2]
("This problem may occur when an antivirus application is still running
during the installation of Windows XP SP3.")
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953791

Device Manager may not show any devices and Network Connections may not show
any network connections after you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 [or SP2]
("This problem may occur when an antivirus application is still running
during the installation of Windows XP SP3.")

WinXP SP3 [and SP2] - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3) and *only until* 14 Apr-09.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | select
"Windows XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"
