Hi,

Newbie Here, I have a problem.

I tried MS update for XP HE SP2, I got to the point were MS attempts to
download the updates and after that, my system attempts to open the
downloaded updates.

That's when I get a message stating," the system failed to successfully open
the updates".

I also checked the control panel and I didn't find any of the failed updates.

How can I clear XP to accept the a reload of the updates?
Or how can I find the updates and install them from my HD, that's if they
are there?

I forgot to post the error code:

Installation Failure

Error Code: 0x80070005
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources.

I did try it several times, I got the same result each time.

The first time I got through, I had to disable the firewall, will the
updates were downloading. I turned the firewall back on and all heck started.

Three updates failed, the download window said the rest downloaded.
But none of them where installed in the final window opened.
Thus the error message.

Sorry about the fragmented posts.

Thanks again

Check that you are logged on with Administrator rights.

For a clean re-download, you must empty your Temporary Internet Files first.
Control panel -> Internet Options -> button Delete Files -> check Delete all
offline content.

If your automatic downloads fail, you can download the complete SP2 (all
266MB of it!!) from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Thanks Robin from across the pond!

I'll give it a try.

I think, I did something to rile XP, I only had one account and XP started
telling me that I needed admin rights to access help files. So I created
another account and still couldn't gain access.

It maybe time to wipe, reformat and reinstall?

But thanks for the tip, to fix this problem.

<kibbitz>

Slow down a bit before you consider "wiping" the current installation of Windows.

Does this XP system (a) already have XP service pack 2, or (b) not?

From Start menu button, select RUN option. Then type in

winver <press Enter-key>

There will be a long display of Version number
what does your Windows Version & build show as ? (that l-o-n-g string Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Does the build string show service pack 1 or service pack 2?

I suggest you review the windows update log file and see what it contains for the last session.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and take a look at (usually C:\WINNT or \Windows )
%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Scan down to the bottom. Review contents.
You need to look for entries marked "Error" such as 0x......... (where ....... are numbers)

See KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Also, just to get the Error from update history:
Go back to Windows Update, but then select View update history. (When you first get to website for Microsoft Update-Windows Update, look at left-hand column, under Options. Press "Review your update history".)
If this is on V6 of Windows Update, you should be able to click on that error note (the red X), and see some info.

Hi Mr N.,

Thanks for the guidence!

I did the WinVer and yes SP2 is in the text.

Thanks, that was a fast and easy verification method.

I am able to get the "red x" listings on all 45 uninstalled items. when
I visit the update site too.

I've cleared the off-line and temp files using hardware tools clean up.

I also noticed last night, that the activated update on XP attemped to
download all 45 items duing shutdown. I double check with update and
got the same fail to install updates message, the next day.

I will go read the KB regarding update log interpetations.

Here's the end of the log:

Tryby,

On the error 0x80240020 ( as seen in your log): Does your login-account have administrator rights? That would help.
This is from a Windows Update troubleshooter page.
<q>
Log on as an administrator for this computer..

1.. Click Start
2.. Click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts.

If you do not have an administrator account, ask one of the administrators listed to create one for you, and then log on using that account to visit Windows Update.
</q>

Better yet, get the administrator to run a visit to Windows Update. And *if* you are in a corporate network, then for sure see your system administrator.

This only if you know how to use the Windows registry editor. If you don't or are unsure, skip it:
See the suggestion by Patti Macleod [MS-MVP] at this archive http://tinyurl.com/znzuh

BTW, 45 update items is way-too-many to do in one single session. I'd like to see you just make a list of the update items --- only the critical items/ security items. Visit Windows Update website, select Express option --- but just make a list.
Then, try selecting only 5 the first session. (un-check the others). Then see if you can proceed with those.

Thanks M,

I am the sole administrator.

I've riled the XP gods some how?

All of a sudden ,I get messages stating "use or ask administrator
feature". I had to create an administrator profile and that did not
stop Help and other features, from asking me to sign in as one.

I will try to load just 5 critical updates and see what happens.

Didn't get a chance to read, the "how to read the update log", yet. It
looks pretty intense.

Thanks again!
