hi guys, maybe someone can help. automatic updates has been trying to upload
the latest (feb) updates for windows xp on my laptop. problem is it seems to
stall at 17% and then nothing happens. it stops downloading the updates, then
after a while the update icon appears in the toolbar again but it is still
stalled at 17%. i have tried turning automatic updates off and updating
manually from the support website, but it fails each time i try. i am
scratching my head here, so any suggestions would be appreciated! oh, i am
connected via a local area network at the office and having no trouble
getting any other external data so don't think it is a firewall problem.
Thanks for any advice.

hi martin,

your problem looks very similar to mine, except that in my case
the update icon insists on 14% downloaded. ;-)

could you please try to surf to 'download.microsoft.com' and tell
us what happens then?

thanks.

Hi quadx, at least i am not alone in this problem then!

An attempt at manual download has produced error code 80072EFD - i have
checked and the support.microsoft.com site tells me that this could mean one
of three things:

(1) A firewall on my computer or local network is interfering with my
connection to the Windows Update site.
(2)The Windows Update Web site is mapped to a specific IP address in the
HOSTS file on my computer.
(3) Proxy server settings are interfering with my connection to the Windows
Update site.

I think I am going to have to speak to our network manager on Monday and see
if he can see whether it is one of these three issues. What seems odd, if it
is one of the problems above, is that the downloads should get to 17% before
stalling. I mean, if it really is a firewall/specific IP mapping/proxy server
problem, you would think that the download wouldn't start at all rather than
get to 17% then sticking there.

So, I am still scratching my head LOL.

i think it is none of these.

the icon just shows a percentage; in real nothing is downloaded.

Hi quadx,

Thanks for your further post.

In fact, subsequent to my last post I followed your first advice and went to
the download.microsoft.com site. I have now downloaded each of the 9 updates
manually, one at a time, and run them. That has worked, so the problem is
solved for now, although it was rather time consuming and i don't know if the
same problem will occur next time there are updates available.

Anyway thanks for trying to help. Maybe it will work for you too if you
download the updates manually?

it was my pleasure.

i can't even download the updates manually, cause something is
preventing me from surfing to 'download.microsoft.com'.

P.S. I see from other posts that you are having trouble getting on to
download.microsoft.com
Oddly enough I had no trouble getting on to that site earlier today, but
then mid way thru manually downloading the update files, after my pc had
rebooted, when i tried to go back on to the site my browser started behaving
very oddly. it wouldn't bring up anything on the screen but just seeemed to
be trying to reconnect repeatedly and very quickly to the site. the problem
now seems to be solved (at least on my pc), but maybe you are having trouble
still connecting to the site? if so,
have you tried:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/s...displaylang=en

instead, which is where you are redirected when you connected to
donwload.microsoft.com?

hope that works for you quadx

Hi Quadx,

Hmm, I guess my alternative url wan;t very helpful for you then. If it's any
help, here are direct links to 7 of the 9 XP update files which I downloaded
manually today. Clicking on the file should start the download directly:-

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...0-V1.1-ENU.exe

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...33-x86-ENU.exe

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...02-x86-ENU.exe

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...72-x86-enu.exe

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...50-x86-ENU.exe

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...47-X86-ENU.exe

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...81-x86-ENU.exe

However, maybe you won't even be able to access these direct links if you
can't get on to download.microsoft.com at all.

I am guessing that you will need the same updates as me if we are both using
XP. I got these direct links from my history folder. I'm not sure why only 7
of the 9 links are showing, as I had to manually download 9 of the files, but
that will hopefully be a start for you.

Obviously you might want to check that these are the files you need before
you run them, as I wouldn't want to be responsible for f***ing up your
system! You should be able to check what you need here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us

If you go there and click on "express install" it will bring up the names of
the update files you need. Hopefully they will be the same as the ones I have
given you direct links for above.

If that doesn't work I could always email you the files.

Good luck.

Martin
