XP home, no initial update

New HD, installed XP home from HP/Compaq install disk. Can not install
updates. It tries and fails trying to install 3.1 & KB898641

prior to updates did you have your system verified by microsoft! this is to
be installed once verified, then all downloads at your fingertips!

I have Validated in order to download 3.1v2. Which didn't help. How do I
validate if I can't update basic start..?

Sorry guys and gals but I transposed 461 to 641.
Should be 898461

Hi CaptRon,

Do the following:

Start > Run and type in msconfig. Click Ok.

Click Services. Click to Hide all Microsoft Services then Disable All.
Click Startup and Disable All.
Click Apply then click Close and reboot the computer.

Now go to Windows Update, using Internet Explorer. Do a Custom Scan.
Install all Updates, except Internet Explorer 7. Hide Internet Explorer 7,
because not all programs run correctly with IE7. If you do want Internet
Explorer 7, do it last.

The Updates will install a lot faster with no Startup programs running
then with Startup programs running.

Once you get all the updates, except for Internet Explorer 7, go back to
msconfig and dot Normal Startup. Click Apply, Close and reboot.

Create a System Restore Point, before installing Internet Explorer 7, so
if it gives you problems, or better yet, an Image of the Hard Drive, before
you download and install Internet Explorer 7.

After realizing I transposed kb898461 to '641' I found the answer I needed.
Change the name of 'Spundsvc.exe' and install the KB898461 update supplied
by microsoft directly, not useing "Windows update".
