Same problem as above, only I seem to be in reverse, I was attempting to
remove SP2. I got the above error code. I followed the instructions in the
link above and at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888162. However, Service
pack 2 is not listed in the add/remove programs list and the command prompt
string (%windir%\$NtUninstallKB834707$\spuninst\spuninst. exe) returns an
invalid path error! Any ideas? All help is gratefully appreciated.

<title>You receive an &quot;Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found -
The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in
the dynamic link library Shlwapi.dll&quot; error message after you install
the MS04-038 security update</title>

<extract>
Determine the version of the Lsass.exe file that is in the %Windir%\System32 folder.
</extract>

What version of those modules do you have now?
(i.e., shlwapi.dll and lsass.exe)
Search your whole harddrive to find the versions available
in uninstall packages too. Note: you must enable searching
for system, hidden, and subfolders (e.g. in Win-F advanced options)

Two or three days after SP2 originally came out, I tried the upgrade upon a
Quantex PIII 300 Mhz machine with Award Bios. It did not work then and,
essentially, would boot Windows up (with the Windows screen and flashing
lights across the bar), then go to a black screen with the mouse arrow for 5
or so seconds, and then start to reboot! This happened every time in Normal
bootup. However: I was completely successful when booting up in any of the
safe modes available for bootup.

This same pattern and situation this week AGAIN presented itself when I
again, months later, did the update once more! (I thought Microsoft would by
now have their act together...). What gives?

Please note that I've done all the virus/spyware checks and used the
automatic update feature AFTER installing all other upgrade items. Thanks
for your prompt response. I already run around in circles in my life without
my computer doing the same!
