XP-Home, Update downloads...FAILS on install...any help appreciate

I'm trying to do windows update of fixes...but it downloads then FAILS to
install...
gives no error or explaination.
Tried with Auto-Update & windows update site
Just cleaned virus & Ad-Spyware off machine...could updater files be
corrupt...& if so ... any links about how to repair/reinstall updater.
This is all on Sony(ViaO) system with XPhome Edition.

Any & all help greatly appreciated...

Hi!

I recommend to ORDER FREE CD from Microsoft. It will install all the patches
as well as you won;t have any problem arising from corrupt download

yes...SP2 cd is on order...but...this System still has to be used till
delivery of CD.
also...I would like to fix the download problem first....nothing worse than
installing over a problem & trying to repair after...

I tried to order the free cd but the US doesn't come up , I am new at doing
this kind of texting
