I am installing from the only user on the system and it of course is in
the Administrator group and permissions are full and read.

I have spend several hours reading every record in this group regarding
"can't update" and install errors. I have read this of course:
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

How do I get out of this mess?

Here is tail of log.

1863.922: Copied file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\dpcdll.dll

1916.812: User Input: OK

Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made.

I checked Permissions, and it shows "Full" and "Read" are checked.
"Special" is not.

Would it be useful fo me to manually delete the key?

Isn't it strange that the example Microsoft gives in it's Knowledgebase
is exactly this same key?

Any help or suggestions very much appreciated!

Thanks for that. I though I was being ignored.

The problem is that there are several keys that are creating problems,
and they are discovered one at a time.

After update crashes, it then does a backout... takes an hour.
Then I have to carefully ensure I have my environment restored before
trying again.
Then I fix the permissions on that most recently discovered key.

But now Windows Update no longer works, so I have to do it manually...
and that's another story.

Total cycle time is three hours between discovery of new keys to fix.

After fixing three keys, one of the backouts broke more stuff.

I can't seem to get out of this darn loop of install and uninstall and
fix key permissions. repetitive install/uninstall seems to be
unpredictable. Definitely the fact that Update no longer works is a
problem. (see another post in this forum).

At this moment, I am doing Recover (again) from the XP CD.

Tomorrow I give up and format the drive... not a good thing. Personal
data is backed up but the plethora of 4 yrs program install is going to
be nasty. I may go back to Windows 2000.
