Towels been thrown in, system is getting a clean install and updates.

You probably have found a solution by now. However, I will post this
information anyway.

You can revert back to Internet Explorer 7 from Internet Explorer 8 by
uninstalling IE8 from the "Installed Updates." This procedure will cause
IE8 to revert back to your prior version of IE.. To accomplish this,
navigate to:

1. Updates
2. View Updates History
3. Installed Updates
4. from here I searched for IE 8, Uninstalled then restarted my computer.

This may be a long way, but it was my way of doing it.

The "Compatibility View" in IE8 was designed for older websites? You can
also download IE 7 for XP here:
