XP Mode installation

I already had Virtual PC installed in Windows 7.

I downloaded XP Mode and installed it. It is in Program files, but it
shows no icon in the start menu, and clicking on the vhd file opens a
window asking what program should open it. An online MS search says that
MS doesn;t recognize their own file.

I uninstalled it and installed it again. No icons. I uninstalled Virtual
PC and reinstalled it. No improvement. I have done all the above,
changing sequence and restarting the computer in between several times.

What's the secret? How do I get the XP Mode to open up and work?

Be aware that Virtual PC is NOT the same as Windows Virtual PC. Two
different animals. Windows Virtual PC (the one designed specifically for
Windows 7) is what you want.

It has very specific hardware requirements (you computer must support
hardware virtualization 100%) and is installable only in Windows 7
Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Enterprise

Thank you very much. Too bad MS couldn't have mentioned that somewhere
on the many flashy, colorful and uninformative pages devoted to the
subject. Now I am well and truly screwed. I was using the MS virtual PC
that was installed for accessing old files on 98. I just tried to
uninstall the "new and improved VPC" (after I discovered that it won't
work on my computer) and found that there is no way to uninstall it.
There's no item in the Control Panel Programs etc. folder. When I
nevertheless tried to reinstall the old VPC it informed me that I can't
install it on this Windows (7 Ultimate). This has been a nightmare. I've
been on the computer, accomplishing essentially nothing for the past
seven hours.

Is there any way I can delete the new VPC and reinstall the old?

Unscrewed. Just did a system restore to a point before this unfortunate
adventure began. I think all is well. I can install XP in the old VPC
and use the programs that don't work so well on 7 there. Not as
covenient as the XP Mode, but at least it might work.

I am sorry and have to make one correction. Windows Virtual PC will install
on all versions of Windows 7 from Home Basic on up, but Virtual XP Mode is
only available on the 3 highest levels of the operating system.

I realized after rereading my post that I was not clear on that point.
