I followed the instructions after being prompted that new updates are
available, it all seemed fairly simple then the prompt to reboot. Since then
i cannot boot XP at all, it alternates between allowing me to select Safe
mode and the other options then it starts loading drivers and kicks out to
the begining again, occationally it comes up with a scan disc in 10 seconds
then it starts the reboot process all over again.

No warning messages.

No codes.

Continual attempts to boot until I power off.

Can anyone help?

Reboot in safe mode and perform a system restore. Start -> Accessories ->
System Tools -> System Restore. Go to a point prior to the XP SP2 upgrade.

If you cannot find that point, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs,
then scroll down to Windows XP SP2 and remove.

I was having a similar problem. It did get to where my desktop was partially
loaded though. If that is the case click on start go to system tools and
system restore. Pick a date before the update and restore the system. I
have not had problems since. I already have internet security and anti virus
through norton so I don't feel I need the extra security that is in here. It
also effects alot of the programs that were running on my computer. Now I
can't get windows update to work and had no problem before this.

What we've done in similar instances (though normally we get a BSOD
here) is to just do a repair install of XP with a *slipstreamed*
version of XP Service Pack 2.

This has worked to fix the few computers where the SP2 update resulted
in a non-booting computer.

This really isnt good news is it? i have had numerous
problems since using the lastest update programme that
microsoft is using......... ive had the reboot 20 times
problem and the wont boot at all problem, both before i
installed service pack 2... ive had to pay for the
priveledge of my whole pc being wiped and starting again
with a fresh install... after doing the all night hassle
of the updates it wouldnt boot again!!! what a nightmare
and hey, i kinda know what im doing to a degree..there is
definately some problems with this software and in
reality if it was a programme we were downloading at
download.com or something and reading the reviews, we
wouldnt touch this with a barge pole! have your own
security and do not use windows update if you have no
problems without it!

I have found the same i had downloaded and installed the program about 40
times on diff drives and clean drives and updates. everytime on my comp i
got the same message. i later did the same with an older computer and it
worked fine. im not sure if the manufacture of the board or parts matters but
i tried a number of diff combos. If it at all helps these are the mobo specs
of the comps i ran it on.

worked:
-processor p4 1.6 512k
-mobo pcchips m925lr sis chipset 533mhz fsb
-memory 1024 mb kingston pc2700 valueram
-video 128 mb albatron geforce fx 5200 switched between both video
cards worked
hard drive any 20, 30, 60 western digital 10, 12, 40 ibm
cd rom insignificant
floppy none either way

didnt work
-processor p4 2.6ghz 800mhx
-mobo abit ic7-max3 with intel chipset 875p
-memory 512 or 1024 kingston dual channel pc 3200
-video 256 mb geforce fx5600 neither worked
-hard drive again any
cd rom switched between 5 on both machines
floppy again didnt matter
-sound creative audigy gamer

i tried with and without sound card so im not sure of either with the mobos
im almost sure it is
i just ordered an sp2 disk in the mail to try on it a few times to see but
no guarantees
happy to help if i can and will stick around as long as ur software exceeds
my expectations.... looking forward to sp2 if it works and longhorn
