XP Not shutting down

Hi hopefully I can get some help here on this. I'm rnning and old Emachine
desktop w/ OS XP and recently when I go to shut it down it does not want to
shut down. Just hangs. So I eventually shut it down from the power button on
the tower, but I want to shut it down properly. What could be the cause of
this and how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated.
