XP pro Auto Update failed

I can not update my windows XP, Automatic update failed :

Updates were unable to be successfully installed

The folowing updates were not installed:
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)

Any Help?

Is this a clean install or a repair install of Windows ?
If yes, which Service Pack level is the OS at.

Try manually downloading the updates.
NOTE: Validation is required.

Windows Installer 3.1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Save them to disk, do NOT run them from their location.
Close IE or whatever browser you used to download them.
Now install Windows Installer 3.1 first, then KB898461.
Restart the system.
Did they install ?

If not, the installation logs for both updates can be found in the
WINDOWS directory (folder). Windows Installer 3.1's install log will be
named KB893803.log. The other is self evident.

Starting at the bottom of the log and working your way back to the top,
look for an error code(s) and then post the entry(ies) that contains them.
