Need to know the numbers of updates to XP desktop search. Particularly the
one that lost me the dog (Search Companion) and gave me Desktop Search. The
latest update is 4 and I have not installed that.

Further info - it seems update 4 (KB940157) IS installed - I've tried to
overinstall to later remove, but I'm told that the service pack file,
installed, is newer than the one I got from downloads.microsoft.com. Where
do I find the Service Pack file ?

Very frustated Greek God

I've moved along a bit. Over-install is a process whereby you re-install over
the offending update so you can get a way to uninstall it. It may be
neccesary to delete a couple of entries in the Registry before the
over-install works. These are in :-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows XP\SP3\KBxxxxxx, if it
was part of SP3. and,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\KBxxxxxx.
You then close the Registry and Over-install the existing offending update.
Hopefully you have now got an $NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$ folder under c:\WINDOWS
and/or a new entry in Add/Delete Programs. Don't forget to tick the little
UPDATE box at the top of the installed Programs Display. Immediately
uninstall the offending update, using either option. This gets you the update
BEFORE the offending one !!! Who said if I was a god I should fix it. I did
and my problem is solved, BUT, I had lots of help !!! Zeus
