I have a 3 year old XP Pro machine, in which I am planning to replace the
System HD with one that is 250 Gigs. The XP Pro System disk is pre SP1 and
does not appear to recognize hard drives larger than 136 Gigs. Is there a
way to upgrade it that would allow a new clean re-install and recognize a
disk larger than 250 gigs?

Thanks

you need sp1 min. you may need a bios upgrade etc.
Is your new drive is 48 bits
try:
http://www.48bitlba.com/index.htm

The question is how do I get SP1 if I need it in order to do the
installation, because with the original XP Pro it will not partition the
drive as I want it partitioned. If I download XP1 after installation, there
appears to be no way to repartition without buying a third party application.

Is there a way to build a boot disk from my system prior to taking it down
for the drive replacement (current system is a XP Pro SP1).

Real problem is most chipsets are 32 bits and only supporting HDD up to 137
GB. There are patches available that tweak the chipset to 48 bits and edit
the registry to support HDD bigger then 137 GB.

For exaple this link to Maxtor for Big Drive support.

First make sure the BIOS on your system supports 48 bit LBA. If so,
then make a installation CD slipstreamed with SP2. No point in doing
SP1, but the directions for slipstreaming are the same whether SP1 or
SP2. See this link for info:
Slipstreamed Windows XP CD Using SP2
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

If the system doesn't support 48bit LBA then see if there is a BIOS
update available to give this funcitonality or get an add in controller
card that will do it.
