XP Pro SP2 keeps giving me an "Access is Denied" message when upgr

I had a hard drive problem and my system would only boot to the wallpaper and
hang. I was able to use the Cntl-Alt-Del function to shut down though. I
re-installed XP Pro SP1 over what was a working SP2 system to see if that
would help. After finding out how to run a system check program by using the
task manager, my system (including registry) was repaired and the system is
back up under SP1. I got the latest updates (51 or more) from the Windows
Update page, although I had to manually install the updated Windows Installer
3.1. Now I am able to download SP2, but about half way through the install,
it stops and gives me the "Access is Denied" message. I turned off my virus
protection software (Norton) but the same thing happens. No error number is
given. I've tried the upgrade 4 or 5 times now. Any help would be
appreciated.

Boot up in Safe Mode with Networking and try again. Also make sure
your login is administrator and/or you ARE the administrator.

Good Luck,

Trev

See the " Access Denied " heading.

I will try the safe mode routine. I tried it with my regular logon and also
administrator, both of which have full administrative rights. Now it's
telling me that
"registry editing has been disabled by your administrator" and I am logged
in AS administrator. I am running Norton again right now. If that doesn't
fix it, I'll try it in safe mode. Thanks for your help... will let you know
the outcome.

My system is BACK!!!! I ended up resetting the registry to default security
levels by using the DOS command of "secedit /configure /cfg
%windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose" and trying to load
SP2 and it worked! I found that suggestion through the link you gave me.

Thanks for your help.

Only thing is, there must be a bug on my system because I still can't run
regedit without running Spyware Doctor. It fixes the problem until I reboot.

Yer welcome Bob. What is Spyware Doctor "doing" that reenables regedit
to run ? If it's removing malware, please post what the malware is.

If it's *not* malware-related you could try running the .vbs script here

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
275. Lift Restrictions - TM, Regedit and CMD

Right click and choose Save As to download it. That will remove
Restrictions for Task Manager, Regedit, and Command Prompt.
