xp Pro Update

I have problems with XP Update (pro). No matter what update I select (eg
security, outlook express etc.) the following problem occurs:

- downloads (say 1.3mb)
- message 'Verifying download' (or something similar)
- then the download will say 'downloading 1.3mb of 2.3mb)

and the process repeats forever (eg then next iteration will say 2.3mb of
3.3mb)

This is for a 1.3mb download! and I get this problem with any Windows Update.

Incidently the Automatic update (yellow shield in the tool tray) will say
something like 93% and stays there forever. I suspect these problems are
related.

Any fixes? I have downloaded the new scripter 5.6 but this doesnt fix the
problem.

Maybe try clearing out the IE Caches, and is maybe worth having a flick
through what's in here "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution", some files MAY need
clearing out. Then I'd defrag after you've done that...

I am having the exact same issue, down to the T. See my post on 1/6/05
"Windows XP Pro sp1 Update never finishes? for details. But worse, is that my
machine keep trying to update in the background and process has repeated so
long that the download size is now at 1.8 gb! Your system my be doing the
same thing.

I'll let you know if a solution presents itself.

My appologies about the alias. When setting up for the first time MS does not
offer enough information to help you figure out what your on screen name
should be.

I have reviewed your suggestions, but the application of them is another
matter. Neither command is recognized as a windows command. Probably user
error.

WU completed an updated, but the size was over 2 GB when completed. Now the
problem persists for the next update file in the list.

I'm having the same exact problems. I've had SP2 since it came out and I've
updated a number of security fixes succesfully via Automatic Updates but in
the past two weeks they never seem to finish downloading. (update.exe cancels
and restarts about once every second on an endless loop )

I tried downloading the updates via windowsupdate.microsoft.com tonight and,
while it starts by telling me my 4 updates total 1.6 MB, the Installing
Updates window will download that much, say "Verifying the Download 1.6 MB
of 1.6 MB" then go back to "Downloading" then back to "Verifying the Download
1.7 MB of 1.7MB" then go back to "Downloading" and loop and loop into
infinity letting the numbers climb higher and higher.

I let it get up to 10,000+ MB the first time before cancelling, doing some
research on the web, clearing out my WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
directory and trying again. Still though, it just keeps looping and looping
between Downloading and Verifying Updates and seemingly downloading more and
more.

Going on Mr Armstrong's advice I launched Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe and the update.exe that is running
is:
windows\softwaredistribution\download\s-1-5-18\1f9b549b31aa4bd195878a487fdb1652\update\update. exe
which I think reflects Security Update KB873339, but regardless of the
updates I choose to download, of the 4 that I need, I always get stuck in
this endless loop.

I also installed bitsadmin off the /support/tools folder of my XP install
disk and ran it as Mr Armstrong suggested, and got the info on my four jobs,
though I'll be damned if I know what this means, here's the info pertaining
to KB873339, the update I'm currently hanging on:

Thank you very much for your feedback on MY <w> diagnostic ideas.
This is the first time that somebody has validated them for me.

Here is the most interesting thing that I see in your bitsadmin output:

<extract>
TYPE: DOWNLOAD STATE: SUSPENDED
</extract>

No wonder it isn't going anywhere. Perhaps you should try resuming it?

I think the command to do that (using the GUID you showed) would be:

bitsadmin /RESUME {4666B030-B9A3-481A-A8BF-A1556900EC21}
</example>

BTW notice that you can use copy and paste in a command window
which is very handy when dealing with long complicated strings such as
as the above GUID.


Did you doubleclick on the AU icon in the SysTray?
Perhaps that is why the download is paused?
In that case I would try clicking there again as a simpler alternative
to the above RESUME command. E.g. try using the GUI to keep
control over the download and just use the bitsadmin command
to check on its status.

[1] Over time I have made many suggestions for diagnostics for WU.
Besides the obvious ones of examining relevant portions of the
WindowsUpdate.log (e.g. as determined by each record's timestamp)
or the ReportingEvents.log or the specific log generated by a
particular update, I have suggested that people use Search Companion
to find all files changed on the day that the update failed, then sort the
results by Date Changed. That has the effect of giving you a list of
files sorted by time by which you can then scroll to the exact hour and
minute that you ran the update.

I'd really be interested in seeing you try to diagnose your problem
more rather than just try to take a stab at "fixing it" but if you prefer
my best guess at a possible "solution" would the resolution given
under code 0x80248013 in the WU troubleshooter.

KB Ok here is an update

The fix '0x80248013' had no effect on my problem.

Running Bitsadmin show the following problem I have 10 processes which were
suspended but this was because I had disabled the automatic update (because
it was never ending)

After re-enabling this I noticed that KB885835 and another (I dont have the
code for it here) were downloading iteratively in some eternal loop. Meaning
that one would download, then the second and then the first and so on...

Re-trying the manual windows update shows the same problem as before, the
download completes, verifies, then downloads a bit more, verifies and so on...

So Im no closer to fixing this darn problem.

I tried and that specific job finished transferring. Of the other 5 jobs, 3
vanished upon /RESUME and 2 threw errors about not finding files. I tried
doing BITSADMIN /COMPLETE on the one job that finished transferring, thinking
this would install the update. That job left the list, though I have no idea
what /COMPLETE did, if anything. I got frustrated at this point and did
BITSADMIN /CANCEL to the two remaining (file not found) jobs on the list.

I gave up on AU via the systray yesterday when I was sick of the icon going
in and out of existence while update.exe flickered on and off in the task
manager. AutoUpdate via the systray has been off and I've been using
WindowsUpdate.com via IE so that I can see some kind of feedback.

about debugging Windows.

OK, after doing BITSADMIN /CANCEL to all jobs, following the instructions
under WU troubleshooter 0x80248013, which called for me to delete the
contents of WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download and also stop Automatic Updates via
services.msc, I made a visit to windowsupate.com once again. Here is the
complete contents of WindowsUpdate.log from when (I think) I opened an IE
window, connected to windowsupdate.com, selected "express install", observed
the 4 files would be 1.6MB total, clicked install, watched the download
window start downloading the first update, and then watched it go into its
usual loop of "Downloading x MB of x MB" ... "Verifying Download" and back
again, as the first update climbed in apparent size to 2 MB, at which point I
cancelled the update and closed the IE window.

The log may start by overlapping a bit with cancelling a previous download
and re-shutting down Automatic Updates:
