XP Pro to Vista Business upgrade failure

In my effort to upgrade from XP Pro to Vista Business, the installation gets
to the point where it has copied all files and then has expanded them. At
that point the installation fails. The error message is:

Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for
installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code
0x8007001f.

It may be relevant that IE7 and OneCare also fail to install.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Davey,

I don't have a specific answer for you regarding this installation failure.
What I'm hoping for in you case is that you've got bad media. That would be
the most simple answer.

On a different note, I did find some information regarding that specific
error message. It doesn't relate to what you're experiencing, but have a look
at the microsoft support website & see if there's any answers hidden in there.

A suggestion from other posts is to remove the DVD and allow setup to
continue.

The reason for the installation problems with IE7 and OneCare is probably
the same reason the upgrade fails. The causes generally are apps like
antivirus, ActiveSync, malware scanners, and anything else that is locking
the registry keys that need to be written to during an installation. A
system with an undetected virus or trojan can also behave this way.

It may turn out that you will be better off using the Vista WET wizard to
save your files and settings from XP to intermediate storage and then
reinstall XP from scratch, including deleting and recreating the partition.
If your system came with XP preinstalled then the restore cd's are
sufficient for what you need to do.

Do not use the XP FAST wizard to save your files and settings. WET cannot
use the file FAST creates. You will need to reinstall your apps.

I had to do this in order to install IE7 on my wife's laptop and that was
with MS Product Support Services trying to help me avoid that.
