i have a new dell inspiron 1150, equipped with xp home. I bought a new copy
of xp professional to upgrade the laptop, for remote access purposes. When i
put the disc in the dvdrom/cdrw drive all it does is spin...its continually
trying to read the disc. Heres the kicker, any other disc i put in the drive
works just fine. I also put this xp professional disc in my desktop computer,
and it works fine. Does anyone know of any compatibilty problems with xp o/s
that dell puts in their computers and just a regular microsoft upgrade disc.
i am very confused, and have tried many things like turning of virus
protection and all that. Any help would be appreciated

Did you buy a retail XP Pro upgrade or an OEM CD?

If it is a retail upgrade, you can select he drive in My
Computer and browse to the setup file.

You could have had Dell install XP Pro for $70 if you'd read
the order form on-line.

the xp pro that i got was from a friend who works for Microsoft. So i guess
it is a retail version, and yes i realize that i could have got dell to
install it for 150 bucks, but i was able to get this new version for a lot
cheaper...now i am wishing that i had just gotten microsoft to install
it...any help out there?

I think Dell installs XP Pro for an additional $70.

Look at the face of the CD and it should tell you what kind
it is, retail full or OEM.

You might contact Dell for their suggestions, you may be
voiding the warranty by installing the upgrade yourself.

You have a defective CD. Contact Microsoft for a replacement.

How to replace lost, broken, or missing Microsoft software or hardware

This was what i was thinking as well. But how can it be explained that this
same disc works on my own desktop, but not on the brand new laptop. Is there
something different about how the laser in the laptop works as compared to
that of the desktop. This is the confusing part of it all. I have no problem
requesting a replacement disc, but i dont want to go throught the hassle only
to find out it still doesnt work. I am able to explore the disc, just not
install. The install just gets hung up as soon as i try. But like i also said
this is the only disc that does this to me. So i would tend to agree it is
defective.

I tried sticking a DVD disk in my CD drive and it did nothing too.
Perhaps it's your drive which is the problem?

> I am able to explore the disc, just not install.

Just looking at a directory, for example?
Do more testing than that. Try to read some of the files too.
