xp to rc1

i am installing from the Microsoft DVD. Ran upgrade advisor, all is okay.
install RC! updgrade, installs fully, then simply states "installation
unsuccessful" and previous version of windows (XP) is restored. No other
error messages.

This newsgroup deals with issues with Windows|Microsoft Updates.
