Every time my system restarts, it takes just under 2 hours to complete - but
it does complete. Any ideas what is causing this?

I have XP Pro, with all updates.

wild guesses:
slow PC, malware, viruses, low disk space, not enough RAM

How does your question pertain to Windows Update, Neta?

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

You have an unstable system due to Microsoft updates which you must have
installed on advice from Pig-Bear, Ken Blake and other Microsoft
Valuable Pigs or their sympathizers.

The only solution left is to to copy your personal documents, reformat
he HD, Install XP with SP3, install all your applications and
anti-virus programs (ideally MSE). Then make sure you have stopped
receiving automatic updates because they are not required . For
heightened security, go to your Firewall settings and check "do not
allow any exceptions".

This is all there is to it and total time is about 1 hour of hard work.
Rebooting a Windows system in 2 hours is very serious indeed.

Although you can't stop refraining posting this kind of BS, it's most
likely not the case for any of the symptoms. I'm "very impressed" by
your special kind of "analysis" lookon at the total lack of informations
by the OP needed to provide any serious help.

Nicely said. Please don't hesitate to print that one and nail it onto your
screen.
You don't have any clue. You only seem to be possed by the idea that
*neccessary* updates are causing anything you make them responsible for -
which is just everything (most likely the weather forecast too).

Thanks. I've a realname and I'm not only proud of it. How about you,
"anonymous" guy? Does posting your sermon and accussations make you feel
better anyhow? Does missleading users, which are searching for help in here
and elsewhere, make you feel better too? Well, these are issues which are
definitly unrelated to any update for any Windows version and can't be cured
by them. And, you know, this not a therapy newsgroup.

Bye,
Freudi

Neta,

Stumbled onto this and I will apologize for the postings of others which are
less than helpful.

Before taking the drastic measure of reinstalling everything, I would like
to make a suggestion based upon my years of experience solving problems here
at work.

I am often called to solve intermittent or slow PC issues and find that dust
is the culprit. I use a vacuum, small china brush and caution to remedy
these issues.
The computer does a great job of moving air and the small fan on the
processor and video card will leave very fine particles on the chips, etc.
Removing this dust and the larger ones too, will go a long way to help solve
the problem.
Often, a good defrag and scandisk of the hard drive will clear up any errors
that "dirty data" caused. On occasion, I have taken very dirty systems
outside and blown the dust out of them with the outlet side of my vacuum.

Of course, if you are suffering from Malware, you will still have problems
associated with those and I would suggest MalwareBytes as a start.

Good Luck.
