I have installed WinXP Service Pack 2 (professional
edition) and now whenever I try to do a windows update I
get the following error when I click "Download and
install now"

"Downloading Update for Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773) (update 1
of 1)... failed!"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forwarding to BITS group microsoft.public.windows.backgroundtransfer
Are you being offered KB842773 on XPSP2? Which build of XPSP2?

Hi ,

Can you verify the qmgr.dll exist on the machine. Lets try and registry the
%windir%\system32\qmgr.dll, now try and download the updates.

Register qmgr.dll,
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgr.dll
4. Click OK.

I would like to see if you able to downloading the BITS 2.0 directly from
the following location.

Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP
5.1 (KB842773)

Sounds like I have the same problem described below. I installed XP Pro SP2
and am unable to do ANY auto or manual updates since. The auto-update
feature works but fails to install time after time. I believe the problem is
BITS which "stopped" and won't start since the SP2 install. Terminal
Services and Auto Update services seem to start just fine.

My OS is Microsoft Win XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600.
Is there a later version of SP2 I should try?

I tried the same thing below installing BITS 2.0 but it failed because its
apparently in SP2 already. Is there an easy way to start BITS? Patch?

Thanks in advance for any help!
Emails on this topic are welcome at .
