XP Service Pack 2 crashed my pc

After installing SP2, got different sorts of problems
until finally, got a black screen:
"Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows
SetUp using the original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the
first screen to start repair."
Well, after getting stuff from both the Dell and Microsoft
knowledge bases, as well as e-mail support from Dell (what
a joke these days!), I get stuck in the Windows XP Setup
screens. They do not appear as the documentation says
they will. The screen after the license agreement is
supposed to offer the choice to repair an installation,
but instead I get a screen that lists the partitions on my
hard drives and to select the one where to install Windows
or to exit. I'm chicken to select the partition where
Windows is for fear that it will simply proceed with
install vs. offering to repair.

This is from the Dell Recovery (or whatever Dell calls it) CD after you have
booted from it or are you not required to boot from the CD?

Yes, I booted from the Dell CD called "Reinstallation CD -
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition."

Go to the next screen. You should see the options to do either a full
install or a repair of the existing installation.
