After I downloaded and installed the xp service pack 2, the firewall was
turned off. When I clicked on 'recommendations' in the windows security
window, it says that the secyrity center cannot turn on the firewall, and
tells me to do so myself.
When I try to do so, I get the message: Windows Firewall settings cannot be
displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start
the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?
CLicking 'yes' I get the message: Windows cannot start the Windows
Firewall/ICS service...

Any suggestions??

Hi Ed_the_dork,

See if the information in this MSKB article helps you resolve the problem:
After you run Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta), you have network-related
problems, or you receive an error message
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892350

another option would be to d/load and run winsockxpfix:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
