Is your Norton's version compatible with SP2? Better check that out.
You're right uninstalling SP1 and a system restore wasn't the greatest of
ideas, but we learn from our errors, I know I have.
Have you tried running the SFC with your original Windows XP disk (you said
you removed SP1 so you're back to RTM)
